Basic Information
I Would Describe Myself As
The "Cliff's Notes" version of the past fifty years looks something like this: my Dad was career military so I grew up a "brat". I was born in Germany but grew up all over the US. Pretty typical teenage years then off to college to study engineering. Joined the Air Force after graduation, earned a graduate degree and after eight years serving our country I decided I wanted a new challenge. Moved to Texas in 1989 and got into the Energy business ... first with Mobil Oil, then consulting. Along the way: three great sons (two still in college), a year in New York, two years in Milan, ten houses, two dogs, a long solo motorcycle trip through eleven western states ... and now a chance to start a new, unanticipated chapter in my life.
Having to describe myself is not something I really like to do but I’ll give it a shot. In no particular order ... I see myself as a little shy and reserved so it takes me awhile to "warm up" and engage when the surroundings are new. I'm honest but diplomatic. Not big on “confrontation” but I’ll do it if I have to. I'm more about a small number of close friends than a large number of acquaintances. I can be incredibly focused (what did you say?!) and also absent minded (why am I standing in the closet?) ... all at the same time! I'm pretty handy around the house (I AM an engineer) but I only read the directions as a last resort (sorry, it's a guy thing). I also don't stop and ask for directions but this doesn’t seem to be a big issue anymore. I work out regularly and try to take care of myself as it's the only hope I have of keeping up with my boys! I love to go to the Texans and Astros games. I'm a huge baseball fan so watching three or four games a week during the season is not unusual. I enjoy golf and love skiing. Finally, there is the motorcycle … I started riding about four years ago and got hooked ... now I own a Harley and riding it gives me a chance to escape the daily grind; I find it incredibly peaceful!
Like many men, much of who I am is defined by my work. The experience of losing a job for the first time in my life gave me an opportunity to assess how far I had come in my first fifty years. I learned the hard way that life is not about the destination, it's about the journey. It was an expensive lesson and I’ve promised myself I won't be that "one dimensional" during the next fifty years. While I've always worked hard I'm now trying to “work smart”, taking time for myself and enjoying a little hard core relaxation whenever I can.
What do I want from this? In the near term, I’m interested in companionship and friendship and enjoying the journey, wherever it takes us! In the future … well, we can worry about that when we get there. I value intellect and common sense. I enjoy someone with a wicked sense of humor and a thick skin (you gotta’ be able to take it if you’re gonna’ dish it out). I respect self-confidence, accompanied by modesty, humility and a genuine desire to help others with no expectation of anything in return. You need to be dedicated to taking care of yourself … it’s hard to do anything else if you don’t.
